Default How clean does a block have to be?

Just picked up a 95 EX that had just blown a head gasket. Haven't done one of these before but I've pulled everything off and am wondering how clean the block has to be for the new head gasket. It still has some black color on the inside part of the block but feels really smooth. Do I need to try to do more and if so what could I use?

Thanks for any info.

Thanks guys, I first used a razor type blade and then a stone (forget what the name is) with oil to smooth and try to get the remainder of anything left. It feels real good just doesn't look 100% shiny.
