Short Ram intake
Hey guys,
I need some advice
Im looking to get an intake system for my car, and i was checking out ebay. I found the short ram intake system. My question is, what's the difference between the short ram intake and a regular intake system.

short ram is a shorter pipe that produces more low-end power (1-2hp)
a cold air intake is a longer pipe that ends behind ur front bumper, and produces high-end power
im kinda debating myself if I should get a short ram w/ a K&n, or a regular K&N drop in

If you're just getting into working on your car, a short ram intake would be a good place to start. I put one on my friend's 88 dx, and he went nuts. lol
If you've had your car for a while, you'll feel a difference. It's not much of a gain, but you at least got dirty and played under the hood.

Well Im just starting to do some stuff. I've had my civic for abt a year or so now and i've finally got some cash ( sorta) to do some minor but hopefully noticable difference. I guess Im gonna take your advice and get the short ram intake. But is it difficult to install. Im pretty hands on when it comes to fixing my car...i mean i do most of the repairs myself like tune ups etc.
if u do get the intake, theres an auction for 96+ civics on ebay for intakes with K&N filters for $55 shipped.
as far as difficulty, i've never installed one but i cant imagine its hard.

Here lies my knowledge. Some of it has already been mentioned but use it how you wish.
Full length intakes add more hp on lower speeds than higher (right up to the VTEC operation point). Short air intake system added more hp on higher speeds (right on the VTEC operation point) on a Dyno Test (with the hood open) but lost power in the real world due to heat. A downside of short intakes is that it places the open-element filter in the engine compartment where it is forced to ingest a diet of hot air. General rule of thumb, power output is reduced by 1% for every 10 degree increase in air temperature. Colder air has more oxygen molecules.

You're going to spend more time taking apart the stock intake than putting on the short ram. Do a search on yahoo or google under images and type in something like "short ram civic" under quotes, and take a look at what the end result looks like. Have mental picture of what you're supposed to have before you start.
if its anything like a del sol, you just unscrew the intake filter box, loosen the bracket that connects the stock intake rubber tube to the intake manifold and youve got the stock intake off. Then put the new intake on with the rubbber adaptor from the intake to the manifold and tighten it, and mount the intake pipe somehow, it should come with something to mount it with, and then slap on the filter. sorry if I explained that in a confusing manner, im not too familiar with civics. Make sure you never get the filter wet while your car is running.
