Default Civic LS 5th Gear??

I drive my civic on the highway a lot and it chugs the gas and I was told I could put an ls 5th gear in my car and it would tune it down a little bit and it wouldnt be so expensive on the gas. Can anyone tell me where I can get just the final drive gearing and how much it would be. I dont want it to be too expensive. Just a quick fix or change to my transmission. Thanks!

it is not going to be a quick cheap change to your tranny. Yes you can put in an LS 5th gear set, but no offense, you will have to have a pro. install it, and it is not going to be cheap nor quick.

it depends on where you get your gear set, and I cant remember if you have to grind the case to get it to fit....I will be the first to say that I am def. no expert on this exact modification, but if it was easy and affordable I am sure it would be a standard modification to anybody with a b16a tranny.

what are the mods on your car? If gas mileage is such a concern, why not just change the tranny out for an LS one anyway? I know that it's a dog of a tranny under normal conditions, but if you are ever going to go with Forced induction, or an N/A build that will constitute a higher redline then an LS tranny wouldn't be too bad. Just my .02

For a 92 Si, I know that the tranny is an S20, right? What are the numbers on the ls tranny for the d-series. I think it's a great idea to do that 5th gear. I have been thinking about the SAME thing recently. Changing out the entire tranny might not be such a bad idea. I don't really need the short gears for the way I drive anyway.

the fifth gear would only help by a thousand rpms at 80. so instead of 5,000 at 80 you would be at 4,000 with ls fifth gear. this is the only palce it would help.....fifth gear. i dont like hearing my b16 rev like that cruising on the highway. it would help with gas milage but only on highway. so if that is the only concern (gas milage) i would say....dont bother. otherwise if you dont like to be in vtec on the highway...then do it.

Well I want to save on gas mileage on my driving trips on the highway. I am planning a couple long drives in the future and having my RPM's tunned lower would probably save me a considerable amount of money on gas. I am planning to strap on a JR SC in the future but no time too soon.
Also what is the main difference between an ls tranny and the one I have now. I was told mine is a main racing tranny and it is tuned close together between gears for steady go but is an ls tranny not or what would be the change between that. Is the ls tranny a lot slower or no. Thanks for the replies!

Also my rpms going 80 in 4th is 5500(vtec) and 5th gear going 100 is 5500(vtec)

LS tranny is much longer, and with that torqueless beast it would murder any fun you ever had of driving your car. The fifth gear only out of the LS though would be tite...but cost/difficulty you would have to find out from your local trans builder or who ever you know that is capable of taking on the task.
