Default Tach question...

hey ya'll. i juss bought a tach because the one in my car is all jackered up. andyway. it's an autogauge (not autometer, but close). i need to know how to wire it. 4 wires; Red is key on power, black is common chassis ground, white is dash lights power, and green is tachometer signal. i'm unsure of how to actually wire these though. obviously... the power/ground speak for themselves. i would assume the white "dash lights power" is wired into the headlight switch. as for the tach signal wire... i'm stumped. i heard it's spliced into a blue wire from the dizzy. any suggestions/insight?

use the auxilary in ur fuse box for the dash light power. if u have a test light...it should be the second to last from the left on the top of the fuse box.

there should be a harness on the top right of ur engine bay (drivers side) that is not connected to anything. (2 prong) you can tap into that for the tach signal.

i assume you mean the the fuse box under the dash. if i splice into that... would i just run the wire into the box, and pin it in w/ a fuse? or would i find the wire on the back and splice into it?

is it covered up w/ anything? i like that idea. perhaps i could splice a mayching connector onto my wire and then juss plug it & seal around it. whatcha think?

yes, the fuse box under the dash. there should be auxilary taps above ur main row of fuses. use a test light to see which one is using the headlamps/parking lamps to tap your wire for the light.

the tach wire in my setup was not covered...but it was tied to the engine harness on the drivers side. it has an end harness that does not connect to anything. service shops/dealers use this to wire up a tach when working in the engine bay. you just run the green wire to the harness.

It wouldnt be on the distributor unless you want to run a wire all the way to the distributor. The harness Im talking about is on the drivers side by the firewall near the brake booster.

oh, i misunderstood. when you said the right side of the engine bay, i thought it was from the driver's point of view. but i see now ya meant if i'm looking from front to back. that helps. i'll check it tomorrow when i head out to the shop again. i'll hopefully have that part figured out. i can handle the power wire and chassis ground easy. as for the white wire for the lights, would i just tear the column apart and find the matching wire running from the headlight switch?

nope, you dont have to tear the column apart. I'll see if i can take a picture for you later on tonight to make it easier for you.
