Default Throttle body problem

First, my check engine light came on. Then I failed emssions because of it. I took it to the mechanic and he said the OBD code PO122 came up...something wrong with the throttle body. He also said that the throttle body cannot be worked on and needs to be completely relplaced. I was quoted something like $1400 for the fix. He said the part alone was $1100. I called Honda and they said the part was $896 and I saw one online for $300. (Edelbrock Part #3811 )

Does this sound right? Has anyone else had any trouble with their Civic idling?

Junk yard can get one MUCH cheaper. It's not extremly common for the sensors to go bad but it can happen. 1400 bucks to replace a TB is REDICULOUS, it's about a 15 minute job and the part can be aquired for less then 100 bucks from the junkyard.

What is the specific code description? Some people have had CELs from dirty TBs. It may just need to be cleaned, but the actual code description would help narrow down the problem.

code is PO122
Specfic problem is the Throttle position sensor. They said it cannot replaced on this spcific TB.

I asked if it can be cleaned or rebuilt and the guy said no...I find that hard to beleive. So, its not too hard to install a TB? I might just do it myself if it's not too big of a deal.

Thanks for all the info

some TPSs have two screws holding them on. some are riveted on. depends. find a tps froma junk yard, and it's really easy to install the TB. mine took about 30 minutes. make sure you reseal all the gaskets. better yet, buy new ones.

Even my mother can replace a TB , just don't forget to replace the gasket. Look for a shop manual on the net.. plenty of those around
Here's an example for a 91 B16A1 CRX http://www.honda.co.uk/owner/CRXManual/62sh222/6-76.pdf
