Default Putting together Axles/Brake Fixture

I'm just finishing replacing my 95 Civic with some new axles, but I'm having some trouble getting them installed. The old axles were quite difficult to remove out of the brake fixture (I had to pound it out with a rubber mallet). Now when I try to slide the new ones in, they get caught part way in at the part where the teeth on the axle begins. Is there any way I can get this on that doesn't require a lot of force or removing the whole brake fixture from the car to get a better angle? Thanks for any help.
