Default Tranny problem...HELP!

The problem is with my Automatic 1992 Civic DX Sedan.

Whenever the car has been sitting for more than a few hours and I try to drive it on D4, the transmission feels like it is "stuck" in the lowest gear. If I keep on the gas to try to go faster, the car continues to stay in the lowest gear and I get up to roughly 5-6k rpms if I want to go 25mph. I have to pull the shifter down to D2 to get it to shift into the second gear, which will give me a little more rpm's to use (3-4k rpm's at 25mph). It will take roughly 5minutes of driving until the tranny acts normal again.

Do you guys have any suggestions short of replacing the auto tranny? A autoto manual swap is out of the question because this is my beater I need the most economical solution to this problem. Hope I explained everything correctly. Thanks!

I've got an auto tranny from my 95ex still sitting in my garage from when i did my auto to manual conversion. The tranny has about 82k on it & had absolutly no problems when removed. Make me a resonable offer & it's yours.

I know you've probably checked this. And I'm going to ask because you made no mention of it. So... just so it's out of the way.

How are your fluids?

Automatic transmissions are hydraulic creatures. 99% of the time when they're sick... it's because of a fluid problem.

If you just changed your fluids and used the right stuff, and it's still doing it, then the valve body might be clogged because fluid pressure is used to switch gears.

i not sure but to me it sounds like the gearsare binding up in normal drive and that could mean rebuild or new trans.......try checking your fluid level and changing it. not sure if it is as easy as a manuel but i would give it a shot if i were you.

if you need a trans i have an auto trans from a 92 dx hatch that will work and i just need to get rid of. ill give it to you for 65+shipping
let me know

To do a transmission service on a Honda:

1. remove and clean magnetic drain plug.
2. replace drain plug after transmission stops draining.
3. fill transmission with OWNER'S MANUAL-SPECIFIED amount and type of ATF through fill hole.

There are no filters to replace. You just need a big pan, a rag, and a wrench.

I've reset my ECU a few times already (not because of this, but it has not affected the problem), and I've had my tranny fluid changed a while back, which also did not fix the problem. How would I go about checking the valvebody?

Thanks for your help guys

The valve body is a part of your transmission. It regulates fluid pressure to actuate the clutches that make your car shift. Some people power-flush their transmissions at the dealer, but I've seen this type of service destroy transmissions before. It's better to just change your ATF every 30,000 miles and your fluid won't get enough crap in it to get stuck in the valve body.

You may have developed a leak. Bad axle seals or rotted transmission cooler lines are usually the cause. Check your fluid level because low ATF will do the same thing as what you described.
