The reason why you don't put more than you need is because the oil level will be so high in the oil pan that the crankshaft (which is just above the oil pan and spinning at a very high rate) will froth up the oil. Frothy oil is very hard for your oil pump to circulate if at all and you'll LOSE lubricatioin due to this.

So if you put too much, pull the drain plug to drain some out to the right level.
damnit!!

*sigh* i guess i'll have to get back under the car tomorrow morning and drain some of it

damnit!!

How long will it take to "ruin" something if I have 4 quarts instead of 3.5? cuz I'll probably have to drive to my cousins to do it (apartment complex throws a shiat fit)

plus I drove around all day as well..

this sucks

Thanks for the info though ur meh hero

should be 3.5 for the 1.6 and 4.5 for the 1.8

I could have sworn the damn owners manual says 3.8 quarts for a D16Y8, that's what I always put in, 110k miles later, it still runs and doesn't leak.

I'm sure .3 qts difference isn't a big deal. But putting 4.5 is definitely too much.

BTW, if you've done a swap (like a B18), use an aftermarket oil pan, added a turbo/supercharger (which taps the oil system), and or any other thing like this, etc, your oil requirements are probably different. (And beyond the scope of this discussion.)

I still have 4 in mine, but I'm going to check it tomorrow morning while it's been sitting all night.

I drove everywhere all day yesterday and didn't check the level of it (my bad) but I think having four quarts is fine, I reallly think that's what I had in there last time.

I'm really thinking I might just stop by a Honda dealership and ask, or maybe call and ask.

But i'm thinking 4 quarts is now biggie, just I don't want my oil to "froth" up and kill stuff..

I'm sure 4 qts is fine. But people are idiots if they think by my saying "more than what the manual specifies" to equivicate "immediate frothy death". The deal is that the more oil you put in, the higher the level and the greater the chance it sloshes up to the crankshaft (because you're car does jiggle around). Something extreme like 8 qts (pulling a number outta the air) will definitely be a problem. So, between 3.5 (as the manual states) and 8-ish is a grey area of risk, just varying severity of risk. Nothing is perfect, not even the recommended 3.5 qts since you could find some extreme (but rare) case that would cause that to have problems.

why not just put in 3.5 and then use the dip stick to gauge how much more oil you need, if any?
