it should be replaced 17k miles ago at 90,000. pop open the t-belt cover and feel how loose the t-belt is. if it is tight and when you rev the motor at 6k, it is still holding up tight, chances are the previous owner already changed it. if its really loose at 6k rpm, change it just for safety. you dont want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere with a dead engine.

How can you tell if the timing belt is tight or not when you rev the motor at 6k RPM? Des the timing belt move when you rev the motor?

if its whobbleing around very bad its needs to be changed. if it feels tight with the motor off, and does not wobble at high rpms, then its good. it really depends on luck i guess. 90k is manufactur reccommended, but i know a person who have driven 200k without replaceing it, was the original owner that didnt know about such a thing as a t-belt.

If you don't know when it was last changed, change it now. End of story.

I drove my 92 LX two or three times as long as it should have gone. I would have to check my records, but I know it was WAY too long. Now that I've done and know it's not "that" hard I will be doing it again in a few months.Definetly change the belt and waterpump soon. I don't rev my motor over 4,000 though so not too much stress on the belt. If you drive yours hard at all, I would do it now.

I thought the Civics was 60-70,000 intervals? I know my wifes CR-V is 90,000- I'll have to do that one towards the end of summer.

Kai's right
nevermind poping off the valve cover just change it.
If it breaks while you are driving on the highway you could bend a valve if the valve is stuck open when the belt breaks. this would be even more costly than changing the belt because youd have to take the head off change the valve and of course change the timing belt.....just one thing to consider... theres a thing called preventive maintenance.

90,000 is the max allowment for it not when it should be changed, its best to change it around 60,000-80,000. personally I change mine at 60,000. most places change the waterpump also at the same time but watch out because some places only do the belt.

its not as easy as it sounds, but its not terribly difficult. you need to remove the crank pulley. if you dont have an impact that can handle 250ft.lbs then its a problem. you need to remove all belts and the motor mount.
NeverBX is right its wise to do the water pump and the belt tensioner. USE ONLY GENUINE HONDA PARTS!!!
