Ok, maybe someone can tell me what are my chances of passing the smog. I have a 91 Civic DX, and I am about to replace the motor for an impoort. I need to because one of the piston rods is shot. Anyways, I live in South Cali, and I am taking my car to Kay Wantanabi in Lynwood. (just in case you know them). They are going to change the head and block, but keep everything else from the other engine. You know, PCV valve, EGR, and all that. The car has been sitting for about 8 months now, and I know I need to change the cat, and I am doing all the pipping as well, with new exhaust. I am going to clean the EGR as good as I can, and I am going to let the cat warm up. But aside from that, what else can I do in order to pass the smog? They are putting new plugs, oil, and all those miscellaneous parts. Please let me know if you can help me. I don't have much cash to be tossing around for some fool to pass my smog.

From a business perspective, I highly recommend against you going to K. Watanabe. Not the greatest when it comes to customer service. ESPECIALLY THE ONE IN LYNWOOD... Besides, there are a lot more affordable places throughout so-cal. What motor were you planning to swap in? Another D15? If so, just take a drive to some of the local speedshops in your area. They're bound to have old D15's laying around leftover from swaps into the EF chassis like yours. And more times than others they end up getting thrown away because it's not something they could really market. If you're lucky and find one in good condition, I'm sure you can get it cheaper than most places if not for free. Most times you'd be doing the shop a favor picking up a motor like that. Good Luck... BTW, is it a hatchback?

Yeah, it's a hatchback. I asked my boss from and he said they did 2 jobs there, and they are still going strong. I don't know any other places that can also give me a year warantee on the motor. Can you tell me where else I can go then? I live in Alhambra, and I am not sure where else to go, since I've heard "some" good things about K. But I would like to know other places too.

Default 93 civic failed

I have a 93 civic si with 227000 miles I repalced the cat a year ago and I failed smog, just barely, in northern california.

Hydrocarbons (HC)
MAX. AVE. MEAS.
15MPH. . . . 93. 21 . 93

25mph. . . . 59 . 13 . 60

Everything else was fine.
I read some of the suggestions below and I was wondering if they would work in my case as well?

Seems like you have lots of unburned fuel, so I would check your plugs.
