Default ECU help

Hi,

I am new to this engine swapping info.... infact I bought the car with it completed so I had no knowledge of the process as it was happening.

Can someone tell me....I have a 1993 Del Sol with a JDM b16a(2) with a '93 GSR head, and I am not sure how to tell what ECU I have....what should I be using (I think the car has an aftermarket ecu right now) It also has a NOS setup.....doubt I'll use it, but my b/f wants to try it out once...hahaha...also (LSD) differential transmission, injen cold air intake, Ractive full catback exhaust including header...if that matters for the ecu.

The problem is it keeps backfiring (like a poping noise & sometimes a spark) when shifting....I thought maybe a fuel regulator would help, but someone told me it's the ECU.

Thanks for any info

~Kiersten

PS sorry if some of this is unclear....I'm a girl who just needs to learn a bit more about her car

That car should be running a P30 (You might find a P61 in there, but P30 is best.) It sounds like yours has some aftermarket chip in it that is making it run crazy rich, which would cause the popping and flames.

Replace or rechip to a standard P30.

if it has the GSR head than it wouldnt run the p30 ecu because it wouldnt be able to open the butterflies on the GSR intake manifold.

edit: reading > meh 93

yes...the p30 is the ideal ecu, or the obd1 pr3 j51 ecu

Thanks guys.....ok so we just pulled out the ecu to check what he has in there......the serial number is 37820-p28-asi

Does that mean it's a p28 ecu? Isn't that the stock Del Sol? Could he have done something to it preformance wise to upgrade it or he running the Del Sol ecu with the b16?

Another thing, but this is a whole new post....do the 88-91 B16A JDM engines start with a 1 on the block? That's what mine has but the seller told me it was a 2nd gen JDM b16a?

Thanks again!

That's a stock 92-95 EX/Si computer, probably rechipped. It will work fine if you get a stock B16A map chip installed.

I think the 1 million series is a first gen B16A.

Hi Kai,

Thanks so much!
Is there any way I can tell if he did have that B16A map chip installed?
All I am trying to do is getting to stop running so rich....the backfiring is embarassing

Would a fuel regulator help or is it better to control the fuel with the ecu....or is it even possible to do that?

Thanks for helping me

Opening the ECU and looking for the chip will usually do it, they aftermarket chips typically have a sticker marking the program on them. A stock P28 wouldn't make a B16A run rich, if even at all.

Don't fool with pressure regulators yet. All this can be solved with a dyno tune and an air/fuel controller, if you're willing to spend the money, however if you have some kind of "Spoon" or "Mugen" chip in your ECU, you need to get rid of it. They really wack out stock and lightly modified engines.

Ok, so I still have to pull apart the ecu....another day.....but say it has a "spoon" or "mugen" chip in it, can I replace it with a p30, just as easy as that, or is there more to the whole "chip replacement" thing.

And is p30 still what you would recommend...now knowing I have the 1st gen B16A, with the GSR head.

Thanks again Kai

The '93 GS-R PR3 head is identical to the first gen B16A PR3 head with only the slightest cam profile differences. You basically have a complete first gen B16A engine.

Chip replacement involves desoldering and all sorts of fun stuff. The easiest thing to do is to buy a whole P30 ECU.

Kai....if ur out there....

I just spoke with the previous owner...I guess the ecu has a Mugen chip in it, but he says it's programmed to the engine. He said that maybe if I swapped the cat converter (catback/ractive exhaust) back to a stock cat converter that might help the cars preformance....what do you think? Will it stop the popping/backfiring and the strong fuel smell?

Thanks again for your advice
