Default Pump Gas

Hey, i run 91-93 octane in my D16Y8. it says in the manual to use a pump gas of 86 octane or higher.....however i was pumping gas today, and another dude with a civic walked up to me and commented on my tailights, then he told me that i "shouldn't be running such high-octane gas in a civic" But i dont know about that. Will using a higher-octane gas than required do anything bad to your engine, like **** up the seals or something?? i think i have heard about this kinda stuff before, i just am not sure.

There are an absolute TON of facts, myths, and opinions out there about the gas issue. Everyone you ask will tell you something different, swear by what they say, but not be able to provide any concrete factual backing, except that 'their mechanic told them', or 'they read it somewhere'. You'll see what I mean when people start replying to this thread.

My personal take is this - there's no reason to run higher than 87 octane, as recommended in your owners manual. Some people say running higher octane is actually bad for the car - I haven't ever seen any evidence of that, or heard of anyone having a problem from higher octane. BUT, I don't think it's necessary or good at all to run higher octane than your engine needs, so frankly, I think you're just pouring your money out the window for no good reason.

Run 87 gas like the manual says, save your money, and forget about it.

unless your owner manual says otherwise, there is no benefit or negative side effects to running a higher octane other than money down the drain... unless u have a lot of it.

the only exception i know of are fords where they tell u to use a specific octane (87 i think) and no others. no higher, no lower.

Octane is harder to ignite, so actually higher octane gas can take power from your car. The rule of thumb I've heard is use the lowest octane that your car manual says you can use.

this is true.. this is why it can protect against detonation in higher HP, forced induction aplication... i agree with the mustang guy.. if you drive a stock civic with altezzas whats the point of higher octane... i guess the question is.. what makes you choose more expensive gas?

i personaly run 94, but that is only because of nitrous... if i did not run nitrous i would use the lowest possible without pinging

i run 94 because i run nitrous,...vtec motors take 92+ ,...pumping 92 octane is not gonna take power away from your motor,..race gas will,..but not your average 92+ that you can get at your local gas station
