If I were going through all that work I would pick the Forester shell over the 2.5 all day especially considering weight to power advantage and the fact that it still isn't all that common. Finding a low buck first gen that hasn't been beat to hell is a lot easier than a 2.5 and insurance will be dirt cheap...but underneath the skin it is all STi.
I'm pretty sure the 1st gen impreza wagon is significantly lighter than 1st gen forester. And, IMO 1st gen foresters need a lot of lowering and paint work before they even begin to approach decent-looking.
