we just went to st. martin recently. personally, i wouldn't do all inclusive there. too many restaurants and things all over the island, it would suck to be locked down to one place.
for me the best trips are where we can explore and experience the same things the locals do.

Did an all-inclusive with my family in summer of '08 in Cancun. I agree with what others have said, it's perfect if you just want to relax by the pool/beach, eat and drink. But probably not worth it if you want to explore the local scene and do anything adventurous.
Why didnt you guys just take a cab and visit the city, market, downtown and so on?
every time i went to all inclusive i tooke at least 2 days to visit the local areas. Actually last time in Cuba I we were talking to the hotels front desk chicks. We had such a blast and they actually invited us to there place for a day. It was amazing! they prepared the best food ever, had tones of people over and we ended up playing domino with the locals till like 1AM.
A resort is great but it shouldn't stop you from exploring the local grounds too :dunno:
