Your reason makes perfect sense, but he'll be discourage because he won't see any weight lost. Lose the weight first through lots of cardio and weight lifting without the supplements.

If he's using the Protein as a meal replacement, I think that is ok.

Alot of places i've been reading states that to help with fat loss i would need to consume at least 1g protein / lb of lean body mass a day. For me, my lean body mass is 147. I also lift hard so I expect the weight to stay the same roughly, but what I look for is my body fat to decrease. My goal for right now is to lose 2% body fat a month. I need that extra oomph that im not getting like i did before. And that extra oomph was the protein drink. Granted I ate the same amount of shit day to day, but i didn't lift as hard as i do now.
I think with the protein shakes throughout the day I should be fine and should begin to see increased gains both off my body and on my body.
First step is to have a body like Phats, then move on to Chanc's. Hopefully by the time I get chanc's body it'll be wedding tiem and i can totally walk around the beach nekkid. Then once i'm done with my Chanc body, i'll get a body like Jay's.
Then when it's time for kids......or i get a divorce.....a body like Reech's :love:
