My son would turn off the tv or hit things with his toys and we just redirect his attention to something else like playing his little piano, reading a book, or tickle time. My son is extremely well behaved for an 18 month old. That mother does not know how to parent a child, she knows how to boss a child around. You shouldn't treat your children as anything less than your equal, they're just a smaller version of you. If you want to change the world you have to start with your children.
You sound like a parenting book I wouldn't buy. If you keep this up, you might have a Nanny 911 on your case when your son doesn't give a shit about where you're redirecting him to. Remember, what you see as a positive redirection is only relative to YOU. You'll more than likely run out of things to distract him, and he'll start ignoring you.
