theres no need for a pump at a shoot event considering you dont need more than 2 shots nor should you take more. many events limit the number of rounds you can fire to begin with and you can actually bring with you onto the coarse
also a pump requires you pump .... hence its much much harder to pull your second bird
a pump also means you lose your tracking even more when you reload
and a pump doesnt allow for the use of a modified and full choke on the same gun. a O/U allows for two different chokes for that second shot that needs to reach out farther.
theres many reasons O/U are the best option for skeet & trap. my dads custom O/U cost over $2k when he had it made. he was jr state champ back in the 70's and very big into skeet. its hands down the funnest shooting sport not to mention one of the trickiest.
all justifiable reasons to get the o/u if he is looking to shoot skeet/trapp exclusively or if he is looking to get into competitive shooting.
not easy to justify if it is a multi purpose weapon.
