205/45R16 is the correct size to preserve the original rolling diameter of the wheel. I'm a tiny bit skeptical of the +40 offset as well, because my 16x6" rims are a +42 offset.

Worst case scenario.. if you do rub with a +40 rim, a set of 3 or 5 mm hubspacers and longer wheel studs will solve your problem.
Using hubspacers will just put him closer to the fender.
