the nazis werent stupid when it came to strategic planning...hitlers fanatical need to completely destroy the jews is what doomed them from the start. the military power and minds they had were impressive, no matter who you are.
they knew that going through the alps would take a enourmous amount of time for what amounted to essentially no gain...the swiss were in the wrong direction from the enemies they needed to be fighting. they were already engaged with the french, they had most of their eastern neighbors subdued and to the south was italy, their ally. to take the hard route through the swiss alps was pointless. instead they knew why not deal with the real threats because once they defeated france, the swiss would be surrounded and have no choice but to deal with a german europe.... the swiss made concessions to keep their soveirgnty(sp)
