DVDs are recorded in 480 lines per frame

HDTVs are 720 or 1080.

upconvert means to convert 480 up to 720 or 1080.

all HDTVs scale lower resolutions to HDTV resolutions.... but Upconverting DVD players usually have a better scaler built in compared to the one in the TV.
