I have some oil on the sides of the oil pan, and none above, so I assume that is where it is coming from. Some of the oil looks very old, so I am guessing it has been going on for a long time. One seam looks to be wet and oily too...
That doesn't work. The gasket itself probably is deteriorated like an old rubber band and won't hold the oil in no matter what. It wouldn't hurt to try, but you have to be careful like tegbooster said because those bolts snap extremely easily.
