short gears will always help, that is all a myth about the LS gears being better.
now as for the LS pistons, i can understand wanting to downgrade compression, but honestly, if you went through all the work of breaking down the block again why didn't you use forged pistons, or at wait until you have the money for them?
with forged internals you'll be able to push way more boost without the fear of accidentally detonating and finding your rotating assembly at the bottom of your oil pan.
