The harness was most likely installed incorrectly causing his hips to stay planted and allowing the main part of his thoracic and lumbar spine thrust forward into an unstoppable hyperextension which then led to the breaking of the spine in several areas, severing nerves and causing un-doable harm. If the airbag was in tact most likely that would have not allowed the flex in his upper torso into the wrong direction. It may have still bent but not broke and if a break was to occur it most likely would not have been in 3 places.
