I figure the less tread you have the better the traction (on dry pavement) because less air can get in between the grooves. My extra front tires I have are almost like slicks, but I use them on track days only

No that's not why you use DOT racing tires. Less tread usually means more grip since the treads help evacuate water, which can be good if you autocross or race in the rain
