all hpdes require a m90/sa90 or newer compliance helmet...all convertibles require a 4 point roll cage but coupes and sedans don't

as for autox i'm not sure what helmet req'ts are and if convertibles require a roll cage

You don't have to repeat the rules. I think allowing people to use M helmets also is bad.

I'm not sure I agree with your take on M helmets. SA helmets were designed to protect against short intensity multiple impacts, whereas M helmets were designed to protect against 1 hard, high speed impact followed by a few lower intensity impacts. With either helmet it should be replaced if it suffers any kind of heavy impact, like dropping it on the ground from standing level or [my personal fav ] throwing it into a racecar in rage.

The core on any helmet is high density styrofoam, yes. The outer shell is what adds the weight and takes the initial impacts before it is spread out and absorbed by the core.

in that sense it's kind of scary that people don't realize what they're doing... though at the end of every race i watch everyone chuck the borrowed helmets from a few feet away into the back of a trailer.

Yep, every impact any helmet takes just weakens the core's ability to absorb energy.
