It's amazing how many people think of the classic "bad guy breaking into the house" scenario. I don't know where it came from but I'm pretty sure there's a lot less bad guys that break into houses in the world than most people are convinced exist.
If anyone has seen Bowling For Columbine, the interview with Charlton Heston at the end where he's talking about the same old bad guy breaking into the house scenario. And he lives in a freaking gated estate in Beverly Hills.
If everybody stopped assuming the worst about everybody else, there would be so fewer problems in this country.
I can't think of one situation I've put myself in where I honestly felt threatened by another person to the point of defending myself. If you don't put yourself in those situations it's pretty easy to avoid them unless you live in a really shitty area.
The only "fight" I've ever been in was when this dude who I already didn't like tried to put his balls on my shoulder at a party. I told him to quit fucking around, he kept acting like a dumbass, so I broke his jaw. But that wasn't self defense, that was because I hated that guy and wanted to let him know to not fuck around any more. I'm definitely not worried about his punk ass breaking into my house and stealing/pillaging/raping either.

Fuck the paranoid American understanding. If people stopped thinking everyone else was out to get them we would be fine.

Did you watch Bowling for Columbine lately, or anything else Michael Moore related?
