If anyone has seen Bowling For Columbine, the interview with Charlton Heston at the end where he's talking about the same old bad guy breaking into the house scenario. And he lives in a freaking gated estate in Beverly Hills.
If everybody stopped assuming the worst about everybody else, there would be so fewer problems in this country.
I can't think of one situation I've put myself in where I honestly felt threatened by another person to the point of defending myself. If you don't put yourself in those situations it's pretty easy to avoid them unless you live in a really shitty area.
The only "fight" I've ever been in was when this dude who I already didn't like tried to put his balls on my shoulder at a party. I told him to quit fucking around, he kept acting like a dumbass, so I broke his jaw. But that wasn't self defense, that was because I hated that guy and wanted to let him know to not fuck around any more. I'm definitely not worried about his punk ass breaking into my house and stealing/pillaging/raping either.
the bad guy breaking in is just a part of our parinoid american self understanding... its not that its all that common, its just a scenario that we can all imagine... I am a pacifist, and think the world would be a better place if more other people were too... I'm only violent with my close loved ones, and thats because I'm a fukkin drunk... (and on a couple occations I had to defend people who couldn't defend themselves). Too many people are too quick to jump to dangerous conclusions
