burns the carbs you already took in first then goes to your stored energy a.k.a. FAT!!!! that's what the Ackin's diet is essentially about, balancing your carb intake so the calories burned comes directly from your fat...
also, forget all that talk about diet this, diet that... it comes down to one thing:
exhaust more calories than you intake.

depends on the diet...
probably the easiest, cheapest, and most effective way to lose weight is to cut 1/3 of your protein intake, drink a ton of water instead of soda (useless calories), and increase your fruit intake (instead of chips & candy... more useless calories).
Right now I eat more than I've ever eaten since I was like 15, and I lose over a pound a week, due to eating healthy, and a bit of running... (2 days a week, ~ 3.5 miles per run) and I lift 3-5 days a week (probably counter-acting some of the weight I'm losing)
At any rate, weight loss is a simple formula of calorie intake vs. body needs. ~3500 calories = 1lb., so by cutting protein (dense, generally fatty food) and adding fruits & vegetables (you can eat as much salad as you want - sans fatty dressing - and not gain a pound) you would be surprised at how many calories you cut out in a week.
Set a small goal, 5 lb/mo and just watch the intake...
On a starvation diet, probably muscle first.
A substitution diet will burn more fat than muscle, and with a little toning exercise will add some nice definition, too.

well, i'm not in need of losing any weight, this is about an argument a friend of mine and i are having... he said that muscle and fat are burned at the same rate, and that doesn't sound right to me.
