It has to be positioned a certain way in order to pump gas properly, i.e. just straight in. It's a safety feature so that if you remove the pump by accident it stops pumping. In her case, she held the trigger and the whole nozzle unit in effect. Her arm wasn't steady so she moved it around, causing the pump to stop.

I dunno if our gas places are like that around here. I never pulled the nozzle out while fueling as that would risk spraying my car with gasoline, but to me it seems like it would keep going even if I pulled it out.

But then again I have gone to fill up my tank and it would stop fueling even before it was full. I found out I had to leave the nozzle a little bit out, I guess it doesn't agree with my filler hole thing.
