Default texas hold'em question...

when you're playing texas hold 'em, do you need to use both of your cards in a straight or a flush that you're building from the community cards? like if i have A,5 and K,Q,J,10 come up, do i not have a playable straight?

I would assume not. You don't have to use all your cards when you have a pair.

No, you don't have to. You just use on what makes the best hand in any combo of what you have in your hand and the flop.

But then that means that the chances of your competitor's having the same hand is good.

Then isn't that when you take the other card into consideration? I mean let's say he does have the A and 5 but the competitor has an A and 7. Wouldn't the competitor win because of the higher dummy card?
