texas hold'em question...
i'm pretty sure you choose ANY 5 cards to make your best hand. in your example above, it's a draw. the 5 and the 7 are negligible. i've played online where everybody got a draw before because the community cards made a full house.
and just to clear things up, flop is the first 3 community cards dealt. then the turn and river are dealt. sorry i been watching the world series of poker on espn.
then there's omaha hold 'em, which is kinda different.

Then isn't that when you take the other card into consideration? I mean let's say he does have the A and 5 but the competitor has an A and 7. Wouldn't the competitor win because of the higher dummy card?

Exactly, in the situation that Kento explains, if you have an A, 7 and your competitor has an A,8 with say an K,Q,J,10,and say 4 all off suit as the community cards, the two of you would split the pot. Your goal is to make the best 5 card hand with any combination of your cards and the community cards.
Kickers only matter when you are playing a hand that does not require 5 cards, like a 3 of a kind, 2 pair, pair, etc.
As for the World Series of Poker, the World Poker Tour is coming to the Borgata in A.C. in less than a month. You better believe that I will be down there.

you guys are right regarding not having to use both of your cards but are wrong when you say that the 'A' '7' combo would beat the 'A' '5' combo.
the thing is that the kicker is meaningless in that situation because you can only use 5 cards total, therefore the 'A' combine with the 'K' 'Q' 'J' '10' is a five card straight. the pot would be split in that situaiton.
edit: i just read the 2 post before mine and i said what they said. what a noob i am.
