Desert Eagle .50!!
Something to note though...
Said earlier ex-cop also talked about his favorite guns... While he gives the DE.50 major  for it's "Rifle in a jacket pocket" qualities, his favorites were Glocks. His reason? They were the most natural to aim, and sturdy as hell. He loved his Glock 36 (Small w/ laser sight), but the Glock 18 "was an unforgettable experience"...
Good luck on getting your hands on a Glock-18 though

As we've seen the development, design and worldwide acceptance of every Glock model and caliber, one model has all but been ignored - the G18/G18C. These are Glocks that offer the option of fully-automatic fire. The Model 18 has three external changes from the original Model 17: a left side, slide-mounted fire control or selector switch; a barrel that extends past the front of the slide and three horizontal and diagonal cuts that run across the top of the barrel to act as a compensator (the same design used on the 17L and 24 compensated models).
The newest Glock 18, the G18C, has a keyhole opening cut into the forward portion of the slide, not unlike the opening on the Glock long-slide Models 17L and 24, although the G18 has a standard-length slide. The keyhole opening provides a venting area to allow the four, progressively-larger (from back to front) compensator cuts machined into the barrel to accomplish their job, which is to afford more control over the rapid-firing machine pistol.
The Glock 18 is a pretty rare gun, as far as I know there are less than 20 in the UK, and even worldwide they are rare due to the restrictions on fully-automatic firearms.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard this from an ex-police officer and gun affectionado that the bullet of the DE.50 could penetrate and rip through the engine block of a car...

This dude I talked to once that use to be in the Army said that the first time he shot a DE .50, he didn't expect it to be that powerful, so he used one hand. The gun snapped his arm straight up and flew out of his hand from all the recoil.

No cop on earth would recommend a DE .50 for a self-protection weapon or as a carry gun for a police officer. So all of you little boys who have watched one to many Lethal Weapon movies growing up, go blow your wad on a DE. Meanwhile, me and every other guy who knows his guns are laughing our asses off at your ignorant "bigger is better" mentality...

i had a desert eagle kit that had the frame & (2) magazines & (1) barrell for .50/.357 magnum/.41 magnum/.44 magnum. all in a nice wood box. it was a gift. the DE is more of a "show-off" piece than a "self-protection" piece. sold it for a tidy profit. it just wasn't practical.
i have my concealed carry permit & i carry one of (5) guns most all the time.
1) glock 27 : sub-compact .40
2) glock 33 : sub-compact .357sig (basically a .40 shell necked-down to a 9mm bullet like a rifle cartridge)
3) glock 30 : sub-compact .45
4) glock 26 : sub-compact 9mm
5) sig sauer p230 : .380
the glock 27 is my main choice. i also have a smith & wesson model 640 revolver that is .357magnum/.38 special that i keep in the car @ all times.
as far as depending on any for protection, i wouldn't feel underpowered w/ any of them.
one night my girlfriend @ the time & i were downtown nash & had just left hooters downtown & were walking back to the parking garage to goto a club. we had a group of 6 guys follow us down an alley & were yelling obscenitites @ my girl. i put her in front of me, turned, drew my glock & very politely asked it they wanted something. two of em had knives drawn. i heard one of 'em piss his pants before they turned & ran off back the way they came.
not shots fired, no law broken, but i'm positive if i wasn't legally armed that night, things would've been alot different.
i have only fired my gun @ somebody once & it was in my hotel room on vacation in orlando last year. guy high on pcp busted down our door & came @ us w/ a bat. 1 shot to the shoulder (9mm glock) & he dropped the bat & hit the floor. he was arrested & went to jail for 9 months.
florida is a receprocity state (meaning they honor a legal carry permit from another state), so i was never charged. my gun was confiscated for a week while they ran ballistics..etc, but that is standard procedure.
in my concealed-carry class they taught us tha a well-placed shot from anything .38 & above is usually sufficient to stop an attacker. they also taught us not to aim for the head, but for the "center-cavity". this is were all the vital organs are & the best place to stop an attacker.carrying something like a .50 for "protection" just screams "killer" to a jury (if it ever came to that).
my uncle, who is a diamond broker & carries, always says "I'd rather be judged by 13 than carried by 6!" meaning, better to be alive in on trial than dead & buried.

[/rant]
btw: anybody who ever thinks about getting a gun for protection, please consider (1) thing......if you think there is a SLIGHT chance that you wouldn't pull the trigger if it came down to it, don't get a gun cause the attacker will take it from you & KILL YOU WITH IT!!!
it happened to somebody i know.
also in FL if you just showed your gun you could get arrested for brandishing a firearm. I know stupid but it's true.
If you pull it out, you'd better use it.

Thanks for the info guy, and dont think that we are talkin like we dont know shit, well i dont know, but that is why i'm posting and doing my research and talking to poeple who know their stuff with guns. I dont plan on getting a DE.50 for protection as i know that its overkill and "excessive Force" i wouldnt mind the .45 glock. And as you said i do have to consider the fact that if i were to ever pull out the gun, i better be ready to use it for protection because the other person like you said will think i will.
