The Saturn is Dead
Didn't go out the way I thought it would. With all the racket coming from the serpentine belt area, I figured the tensioner or idler pulley (or some other accessory pulley) would go out.
Engine started to run very sluggish, pressing on the gas didn't do anything. Then, I started to smell gas (the kind that goes in the car, not the stuff that comes out of me). Looks like the fuel line broke, or came loose, or some other piece of the fuel system has a leak. I left a trail of gasoline on the road as I pulled to the side of the road.
Probably time to say adios and send it to the junkyard. We better not go to war with Iran and have $10/gal gas because the HEMI hauler is not quite as fuel efficient.

Its got 136,000 miles on it, not much for its age. Figured it would happen soon, but wasn't expecting the fuel system to blow up. Could be a clogged filter cause excessive upstream pressure, which could then cause the fuel line to either disconnect itself from the filter or completely blow - more likely that the connection came undone, I'm assuming the pressure rating on the line has a decent factor of safety.
136,000 isn't that many. I know interior pieces seem to fall off of Saturns left and right, but the underlying mechanicals have typically seemed pretty sound.
Are you thinking V6 pony car or V8 pony car? The v6 mustang (manual) gets 19/29, not half shabby. I love the look of the Challenger, and even though it's a porker it still manages to get 18/27 out of the V6.

Only to limp it onto the used car lot.
Even in the gonzo world of today's used car prices, an SC2 is barely worth $2k out here.
It sounds to me like this is the point where this one starts falling apart in earnest.

EDIT: Both the Dodge and Chrysler comes with an eight-speed auto.
If you can keep your foot out of the throttle, they get very good mileage considering the power.
