not only owned they raped/tortured/invaded korea.

they also killed many innocent civilians. japanese army also looked the other way when their soliders raped women.

and rich is also right. they tried to assimilate the populace of the countries they invaded into the Japanese society.

for example, my gfs grandmother in taiwan speaks fluent japanese. she learned japanese in school and mandarin at home.

during the incident commonly known as the "rape of nanking" in china, they tortured and murdered hundreds of thousands of chinese civilians. men, women, children, babies... all in a span of about two weeks or so. that rate is higher than the nazi's extermination of jews. they would take babies and little kids, throw them up in the air, and try to catch them on bayonets. if they found a pregnant woman they might slash her belly open, pull her unborn baby out and smash it right in front of the her. they'd tie women to beds for days and let any japanese soldier who wanted to come in and rape her - and thats just the beginning

they also used chinese civilians AND american POWs for medical tests using chemical agents and experimental drugs. they'd also "test the limits of human endurance and tolerance of pain" with various creative means of torture.

so i say this wholeheartedly:
Here's to the Atom Bomb

in taiwan, however, they were peaceful and kind to the people, probably due to different leadership in the different areas. they enforced things like japanese customs and language onto the people, but thats a crule thing. all of my grandparents can speak japanese better than chinese (mandarin), even tho they are chinese. they forced men to join the japanese army. several of my grandfather's brothers never came back after being sent to fight for the japanese.
but taiwan was the exception. nearly everywhere else they were extremely brutal and merciless. korea, philippines, and the rest of south-east asia...

communist uprising in korea. america went in to help the democratic south koreans, and after a few years forced an armistice with north korean forces - NOT a surrender or anything. so technically, the war is still going on, its just under a cease fire for the time being. i haven't studied the subject, but it could be a result of the devastation the japanese left. the japanese were never required by the allies to pay reparations to the countries it had invaded and destroyed - the germans had to. as a result, china, for one, was ruined. a government that was already dealing with a communist uprising now had next to no resources left to fight the rebels. granted, the government was corrupt and really not the best militarily or politically. but with japanese reparations, they at least would have had a fighting chance to rebuild the country. many people blamed the horrible state of the country on the kuomingtang government.

so maybe the same kind of thing fueled the korean war?

korean war = kim il sung the communist leader wanting to take over korea.

to put it simply. the japanese were out of Korea after WWII.

i too think in ways it was a justified move to bring an end to the war, and ultimately probably saved lives on all fronts.. but mayonaise's comment seemed to make it sound like he was happy to see some straight up retaliation for what happened to korea/china, than as a means for ultimate peace.
