it wasnt an issue for applying for a home loan, between the two of us we have abotu 20k in debts i think...but its not like we're hurting either way.

yeah $5 k isn't that bad but still can be a problem. If your serious about getting a better job, you should look into finishin your degree. I am so glad I did that. It helped out a lot.

$5k isn't bad as long as you're paying it down and not adding to it, and, probably the biggest thing, AS LONG AS YOU'RE PAYING IT OFF ON TIME and not defaulting on anything. I only had $3k in debt, but I really messed up and had some late payments and defaulted on one and really messed up my credit. However, through a lot of persistence, my credit is about clean now and I got my car financed at only 8.5% interest.

And, yes, you will find there is a ceiling as far as how good a job you can get for most people unless you get a degree. I would definitely recommend doing that if at all possible.

I hear ya on the fact that it becomes quite a nuisance. You just have it in the back of your mind all the time. I would definitely try to make some major dents in your debt. What i started doing is taking out a certain amount out of each paycheck to pay down my debts. Good luck, man.
