I already posted this in the audio/electronics forum, but traffic flows slowly in there
I'm currently running the Pioneer deh-p6400. It's not to bad, good eyecandy, 15 points of sound adjustment, and what I love most, a sub gain with an adjustable cutoff intigrated.
Thats probably what I love most about it, the sub adjuster. I think sound quality is suffering due to the HU itself.
I have kenwood dualmag 6.5" speakers up front, and kenwood 3-way 6x9's in back. All running off a kenwood 800w stereo amp. They're getting plenty of power.
I think I could be using a better HU, tho. But the thing is, I want that sub adjustablity, with the gain/cutoff. What higher-end HU's feature that?
I don't need MP3 capability. Just something that sounds hella good.
and I have two amps, so I don't need a built in amplifier. Actually, I'm thinking I'd perfer a HU without one.
suggestions?

Not to be retarded, but is the CD lens relatively clean? (I assume we're talking CDs)
To answer your question though, I'd try the Alpine CDA-7998.... No Amps 105dB S/N ratio. Single DIN chassis; oversized, motorized faceplate.
$799 @ Crutchfield.
Personally, I don't have that kind of money.

To give you a better idea of where I'm coming from, I just purchased the Panasonic CQ-HR1003U "Ghost Display" CD Reciever, along with 4 Infinity 6002si 2-ways. They'll be accompanied by my Infinity BassLink 10" sub / amp unit (a carryover from my last car). Any thoughts or comments are welcome. I'll have it all in by the end of the month; I'll let you know how it goes.
Anyway, my 2¢. :dunno: Hope I helped. :happysad:

Alpine is definitely good. It all depends on how much you're looking to spend, but you could get a good alpine head unit with front/rear/sub preamp outputs for around 200 brand new on ebay. I'd definitely recommend Alpine. Although, I can't say anything bad about Eclipse. I had an Eclipse headunit in the Prelude I sold.

hmmm, guess I should have put up my system:
Pioneer DEH-p6400
Kenwood 800w going to speakers mentioned above
JL Audio 300/2 going to two Kicker Comp VR 12's (4ohm)
this isn't sony and jensen bullshit
but then again, its not top of the line, either.
so basiclly I want something sub $500
the HU is about a year old, but I haven't cleaned the lens. Still, the S/N is only 93dB or so, so that alpine unit is very ideal.
unfortunatly, I don't want to spend almost half as much money I put into my system just on the headunit. Although I'd love to.....
yeah, I learned that lesson years ago
h:
I also learned that lesson, too
Yeah, 90% people out there swear to Alpine, but I'm a little curious how many of them are just agreeing blindly.
I think I'll end up going to the local high-end stereo shop and have a peak at shit. I just wanted to get some ideas before I researched it, and then take it to the shop.
they match prices

I'm not swearing blindly. I've had a Sony HU, a Kenwood HU, an Eclipse HU, and my present one is an Alpine 9811. I can honestly say that Alpine is the best HU I've bought for the price. Eclipse is a little pricier, but I don't think it's worth the difference. I actually wish I would've gotten a 7000 series HU, but if you're looking for sub $500, i would definitely look into the 7995 or 7897. I think that could definitely be exactly what you're looking for.
