Yep the square of a square root is the number itself. Same thing happens when you take the square root of a square you get the number back.

I agree with you, but I've always thought: When is there ever going to be a situation in the REAL world where you aren't allowed to use a calculator? I mean, why would an employer tell you that you can't use a calculator? It's just not practical in my opinion.

I think calculators are great its just that you'd waste more time trying to figure something very simple out on a calculator than trying to use your brains.

having the calculator is great. but as a convenience. i wouldn't be able to give up the TI-89. It's a great calculator. But if I can do it in my head, I will. I wasn't able to use a calculator in high school until Junior year. I truly thank my teachers for that.

i find myself using math all the time, surprisingly. i don't run around graphing equations in my head but figuring out volumes (custom dimension speaker boxes, considering wood width, etc), distances, gas mileage, and plenty of other times. for homework, i usually do long division on the side of my paper instead of using a calculator. maybe i'm just a dork too...ok i am a dork, and trig stuff (cosines, sines) is actually cool. i've actually gained an appreciation for a lot of that stuff in the past 3 years at college.
