those are all good engines, but the H doesn't impress me that much. b16b is the best design of all b and h, imo. dont know much about the K, but i heard they're better than the b's. or at least thats what spoomgen is saying:dunno:

Miata is a fun cheap car to build up for the track.

Lemme share with you my [and my family's] experience in Miata shopping. Maybe it'll help.

1. Go for the latest model year 1.8L you can afford if you're really serious about it.

2. The 1.6 motors were DOHC [not SOHC], but are down on power enough to make a difference. You'll want the bigger motor.

3. The 2nd Gen is stiffer and more suited to 10/10ths driving, IMO.

4. Based on test driving a well-kept 96 and a then-new 2001 Miata , the 01 felt more tortionally rigid and more "planted".

Thus we went with a new 01.
With aftermarket Mazdaspeed braces, a first gen can come close... it's all about the budget [:eh: isn't it always?]

is the miata engine the same block as the old 323 gtx? i heard thats a good engine too. i never worked on a mazda before so, :dunno:

yes they are the same and that is why you see early miatas running like 20psi with no problems

323 gtx in race trim I believe put out like 500hp? or more...

Yep, the GTX is awesome, but I'd only consider the 1.6L MX-5's for a dedicated auto-x &/or turbo applications.

My 2˘.

Every Miata I have seen has a rainbow sticker on the back of it.......draw your own conclusion.

My opinion is that they are for 3 kinds of people.

1. Midlife crisis
2. rainbow coalition members
3. Women

Aside from that they are awesome autox cars but I would never buy, own, or drive one.

The conclusion I draw is that your town has many people that enjoy a tight handling, FR roadster... and happen to be :ghey:
