i had to take c++ as a class (that's as far as i got, then i dropped out of college and went to a tech school later). i'd say read up on windows manuals and stuff (maybe a windows bible), some *nix (linux/unix) stuff, any programming language you might be learning), :dunno:.

you should read any books on structured programming. programming is a way of thinking. if you grasp the fundamental concepts, then you can prog in any language.

Depends on what the major is? Programming? Networking? Microsoft?

we don't use any windows machiens in our development labs...so that would be a waste of time for many schools.

learn the meaning of OO and you'll be very far ahead.

the major is computer science @ VaTech

fuji, i i have my CS checklist for the four years of CS major students and in sophmore year there OO software design

my freshman year its just obj-oriented development, intro to CS, and internet & systems software...the rest is math. They're takin the first year easy

another thing for the 2nd year is unix....guess i'll look into that too.

oo is a good start
im a kinesthetic learner (learn by doing) so there probably wasnt a good place to start for me
i took a vb class 5 years ago and learned the basics from there
c++ is a bit harder but there are those that will argue that starting with vb causes you to develop bad programming habits
as long as you have a good teacher you should be fine

Do you know what language you'll start with?

Search the web, there is a lot of info. Read up on some free e-books, tutorials, etc.
