Default BMW Question

Why do BWMs have that little square/rectangular cutout in their rear bumpers? Do the euorpean models have something there? If so, what? Everytime I see one, I wonder what is the purpose of it.

it's a cover for the tow hook

but the tow hook isn't there. it's actually where you screw one in. the tow hook is in the trunk with the rest of the tools

I always wondered that. I see a lot of German cars with the square in the back. Why not just have the ones that are hidden under the car like on Honda?

I always assumed that's what it was, thanks for clearing that up

As for why they don't have it underneath like Hondas...I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with ride height, and maybe they don't want that hook hanging that low.

hmmmm I take that back I believe the newer VWs have the tow hook under the bumper now (for the rear) on the passenger side.
