no experience: SV650s
Some experience: CBR600 F2
Experienced RideR: Whatever you wish.
I don't think either of those bikes wil suit your needs for commuting. I'd say something like a '99-'00 F4 like Rich said, comfy as hell, or even an older than that CBR (F2, F3).
Another reasonably comfortable bike is a '99ish YZF600r (not an R6).
All of these bikes are more than capable of walking any of the other bikes, its all rider.
Ugh, I hate these threads. =[
I should note, I've got nearly 40k miles under my belt now; on bikes.

proly gonna be a gixxer. i've had 3 suzukis & all have been good bikes.
thinking about used instead of new - let somebody else pay the depr.
that way i can afford to do a pipe, etc.
found this & want it if i get the gixxer: http://www.mototechno.com/gsxr600.html

I would recommend the R6 over the Gixxer in all honesty because the power band on the Gixxer 6 is really touchy and mildly unpredictable at times.
I drove the R6 and aside from the bike not fitting me the way I need it to it was a great bike and the reliability actually is better than the Gixxer is.
