Default Hostel/Hotel/Motel help v. NYC

Hey guys, so I'm planning an 8 day trip out to NYC to see some friends during my spring break in March. I've been scouring all kinds of sites to find the cheapest tickets and the lowest I got was around 370 so I booked it.

I can spend a couple nights at a friends place, but was hoping to find a cheap place for the rest of the nights. Do any of you new yorkers or travel gurus know reliable/legit places that aren't too pricy? I'm hoping to stay at a hostel just to save money so I can spend it on other things, but I hear it's not the 'safest' thing to do.. so any and all input is welcome.

I stayed at the big apple hostel once when I was in college. I split a private room with another person. Good location. It's very central to a lot of stuff in NYC. No complaints.

Hmm how long ago was that wharbone? 50-60 bucks a night isn't that bad right in the city..

And keith, I don't really wanna cross the bridge every day, but is it really cheaper in NJ? And know how much the bridge toll is?

are you driving? i mean i just took the train.

i've only had to get a hotel once when going to the city and i got in newark, nj. the train was like 20 minutes, but i'm pretty sure hotel prices were a lot cheaper.

other wise, my grandma lives on long island and i have friends in the city i used to stay with.

It was about 10 years ago when I stayed.

It was nice being able to split a private room with a friend because we could lock up our stuff during the day when we were out. With the dorm-style, I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving anything.

you could just be "homeless" and get the real nyc experience.
