The Mustang is always going to handle like a truck. It might be real fast and turn great lap times with the right setup (and don't get caught up in all this drifting nonsense--it's stupid) but it'll still drive like a truck. A friend of mine had one of the original '89 Saleen Mustangs; full cage welded to the frame, lexan rear window, built 302, bigass brakes etc etc etc and the thing was an amazing track car. He turned 1'08" laps at VIR on street tires in it. He kept it for maybe 6 months and then sold it for a '95 BMW M3 Lightweight.

Oh and rotaries aren't that great--they're nice and compact but if you really want to make an RX-7 fly then you drop in a Chevy smallblock.

I'm really leaning towards the Mustang and TSi AWD. Insurance is cheaper on them and mods will really make a big improvement.

My girls step dad used to road race pretty seriously. As a matter of fact he just sold his set-up a few weeks ago. He did ALOT of winning and guess what he drove?? Fox Body 5.0. I've seen em in action at the strip and on a road course. You can make those cars handle just fine.

Like I said man, lap times don't mean that the thing is going to be any easier to drive than a big truck. My bud's Saleen only weighed 2800 lbs and it still was a truck. Fast truck, but yeah.

Domestics are actually easier to work on. I know a ton of gear heads that could dissassemble and reassemble a domestic with thier eyes closed, but have a harder time with an import. An engine is an engine. Suck, squeeze, bang, blow. Domestics actully simplify that.

i like dsm's a lot but they love to break down, especially with mods. My friend's car is fast as hell but is seriously in the shop for months at a time.
