In the following passage, EM Forster argues that personal relations are more important than causes or patriotism. read the passage carefully then write an essay agreeing or disagreeing with forster's view.

i hate the idea of causes, and if i had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, i hope is hould have the guts to betray my country. such a choice may scandalise the modern reader, and he may stretch out his patriotic had to the telephone at once and ring up the police. it would not have shocked Dante, though. Dante places brutus and cassius in the lowest circle of hell because they had chosen to betray their friend Julius Caeser rather than their country Rome.

that the question? i had to do the same thing for my ap english class last week. :chuckles:
same quote was on the board in my class, we were asked to wrtie based off of that. You'd doing that thar college material in class

Kinda depends on the situation really.

If it put the lives of millions of people in immediate danger than yes I would betray my friend. There would be no point to saving one person and sacrificing a greater number of people in most situations.

If it were for something that was already done and held no imminent threat or justifiable threat to the greater number than I guess I would betray country.

I would not directly contribute to his betrayal of country but simply keep my mouth shut if any questions came my way.

ditto, if people would die if i betrayed the country, then i'd betray the friend, but if it were something that wouldn't ruin lives then i'd betray the country

Betray "my" country? My country betrays me, and all the other drones who live here, my mismanageing money and simply taking more to compensate. They wage pointless wars in other countries and spend billions of dollars to do it, under the false giuse that they are "protecting" us, while americans die everyday cuz they cant afford the medicine to stay alive, they same medicine produced by publicly subsidized pharmaceutical companies whose prices are gauranteed by the sham they call the "world trade orgainization" which allows these companies to enjoy the freedoms of US commerce, while skirting the laws that are supposed to make it fair. The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.

To betray this country would mearly be returning the favor.

you can't always see things as they are. if you decided to betray your country and put lives at risk or cause death, whether you foresaw those risks or not, you're still a traitor and will have to deal with the consequences.... and your conscience.

it pains me to see opinions like this. i personally feel that anyone can rise above poverty. my family did it. with enough drive and ambition you can attain almost any goal. "there is no try or try not, there is only do or do not"
