Try this, leave the lights on, have someone watch them, then try turning over the car. Do the head lights go really dim? If so, you have a bad battery or a poor connection. Some batteries may seem like they have juice left in them, but they have no stamina(cranking power).

Good luck.

engine will still turn over without fuel, if everything is in order.

Either battery or starter is my guess since you can't even turn the engine over. Try jump start with another car. If it still doesn't turn over, then it's bad starter. It it turns over, then it's bad battery. Hope that helps.

just to clearify, whats the difference between turning over and cranking? i thought they were the same: when the engine is trying to start, but just not making it. that ehhh ehhh ehhhh ehhh sound. h:

cranking

when it fires i was taught it has "turned over"
i dunno why, perhaps it implies it has "turned over" to burning fuel instead of electric. perhaps it is a throwback to the old crank-days when "cranking" the car meant stooping at the front bumper and putting your back into it to literally crank it, and "turning over" was when the crank started turning on its own.
