I think Donnie, himself, traveled back in time. I think I figured out how to do it. After all the bad stuff happened, he decided it would be better if he did die. He was laughing at the end because he figured out how to do it. That's why the bunny guy was crying at the end because, for some reason, he feels bad about something a.k.a hitting the girl. That's why the mother feels like she knows the girl when she rides by on the bike at the end. Because it all happened and Donnie figured out how to go back.

 

I haven't seen this film yet, but for some reason, it sounds kinda like Run Lola Run.

RLR has a similar "time travel" idea. It's just the what-if factor.

 

you seem to make the most sense to me, but i guess anyone can be right. i rented it tonight for 49 cents and watched it with my girlfriend and her 13 year old brother. it was a trip. the funny thing was, her brother would know exactly what was going to happen in some portions. like when frank got shot in the eye. i knew he was gonna do something crazy when frank ran over his girl. my question is though, why did he see frank with a bloody eye in the movies and then shoot him? he didnt travel anywhere then.....

 

donnies seeing Frank in his imagination, its Frank after he's shot.....I knew he was going to be shot in the eye too becuz of that

 

yeah but why does he see him with his eye shot in his imagination? he didnt know he was going to shoot him.

 

I thought his eye was screwed because remember when donnie and frank are just standing looking at each other, and there is an invisible wall between them. Donnie starts stabbing at the wall, and it lines up right with his eye. That's what I thought anyways.

And whoever said the part about grandma death checking the mail everyday for donnie's letter, I totally never thought about that, but that's fuken cool. I still cna't make ANY sense of this movie though.

 

Alright...check this out. I discussed this with a guy I know who has read the book. He explained it rather well. I'll do my best to tell it you guys. Time is constant. However, when something passes through the portal, aka the jet engine, it creates a rip in time and an alternate world is the result. The alternate world only lasts a few weeks though. In the alternate world, there is a chosen one, the manipulated living and the manipulated dead. It is the chosen ones job to direct whatever caused the rip back through the portal. So Donnie's job is to direct the jet engine back through the portal. However, he dosn't know that in the beginning. That's where Frank, the rabbit comes in. The manipulated dead are people who die in the alterante world. They have the ability to communicate with the chosen one and direct them to the ultimate goal of fixing the rip. Frank is part of the manipulated dead. Throughout the movie, he instructs Donnie to do things that cause all the chaos. Flooding the school, burning the house down, etc. The manipulated living set up opstacles for the chosen one. The teachers and Patrick Swayze would be the manipulated living. Like the science teacher that Donnie talks to about time travel. So ultimately, Frank gets Donnie to do a bunch of fuked up shit so Donnie would create nothing but chaos and sees what happens when he lives. The teachers set up obstacles that allow Donnie to figure out his powers of being the chosen one and figure out what he's supposed to do with them. So at the end...Donnie goes to the cliff and re-directs the jet engine back through the portal which sends him back 28 days earlier where the engine kills him and the rip is fixed. Any questions??
