I would recommend you always wear gloves working in the garden. I hate crabgrass.

it's 100 times easier to pull weeds without gloves than with.

Looks like you have tall Fescue grass.
yellowbasterd hit the nail on the head.
Although if you put down the crabgrass perventer in feb/march it's ok. (After march it's too late)
I prefer preen or scotts http://www.preen.com/products/lawns/lawn-weed-control

Never water at nite:nonoleads to fungus growth or mold)
Do not fertilize during the summer months.
If you really want fertilize during the summer months use a product called "ironite".

you guys do realize he lives in upstate NY right . . . not the south or CA. feb/march there's at least a foot of snow on the ground in that area at least :shake:

I know that
but usually not for the whole month though
Those couple days in between the snow,through it down then.
If the snow goes all the way till april/may through it down then.

this

best is to wait till the first thaw hits and put down what you want then . . . late march / early april in a typical year.
