How do they automatically have to go through the Angels? They might not have to. Reigning champs doesn't men you get an automatic bid in the playoffs, or that the team that makes the world series from the AL absolutely has to play the defending champs.

And the A's do have to play the Angels throughout the season......... so, since you're being technical...... the road to the playoffs goes through the Angels (The World Champions)
