Default IMport Car?

Hey is it possible to import a 1997 audi a4 from germany to california? I know california has a bunch of strict exhaust emissions laws and regulations and shit, but was just wondering if this is possible?

yes it's possible but probably impractical. you have to pay u.s. customs 10%(i believe) of the cost of the car paid and you have to retrofit it to pass u.s. emissions(more specifically california). i'm not an audi expert so i couldn't tell you what exactly needs to be done.

I too am not an Audi expert but from what I have seen over at VWVORTEX is the USDM A4 had a much stricter exhaust system to make it legal over here. You also need to consider the front and rear bumpers may not be in code either for crash protection.

After all is said and done the cost to do it may outwiegh the benefit to do so.

This type of thing was pretty popular in the 80's if I remember correctly. Cars brought into the US from Europe were referred to as "grey market" cars. Perhaps if you do some searches on the internet for that term, you might get some answers. Seems that many of the modifications that cars had to have done related to smog (exhaust) and crash reinforcement in body panels.

Actually any imported car is considered Grey Market. Usually it is reserved for those ars not available in the US (Skyline as example) and is deemed so because of insurance covereage.

As for importing a car from overseas I would contact MotoRex about it as they are one of two or three licensed importers of grey market cars in the US.

Since they do this frequently they can do it at a much better rate than a private individual would be able to.
