I hear they're very uncomfortable.

For an all-around nice handgun you just can't go wrong with a Berreta 92.

Don't the Sigma 9s not have a safety?

I like Glock. They are durable, they are lightweight, expensive, but you pay for quality with handguns. You can break a glock down and clean it and put it back together ( with a little knowhow) Also, the glock is not gonna have as much kick as the sigma. This gun will have a safety, unless you are purchasing a firearm from a police officer that is government property (which you can do)
For the shooting range, it varies, some charge by the hour, some charge a flat fee of 10 or 12 dollars for as long as you want. Bullets for your nine are $12-$15 depending on brand for a box of 50rounds.
If you don't mind me asking, what are you purchasing a gun for? Are you over 21? If not, you cannotpurchase a handgun before you turn 21.
I just bought a 9 and am waiting on my permit for it.

hey puffy, go to turners :fawk:

i'm just interested in learning how to use a handgun, and becoming profficent at using it and also for home protection. i'm 23, so yeh i'm old enough to buy/own one.

so i assume you purchased a glock? and how do permits work? i know you have to wait 10 days for the DOJ to do a background check, but do you also need to apply for a seperate permit?

Handguns are good, but if you're going for home protection, shotgun is the way to go. You've got more firepower, it's intimidating when you hear it being cocked (mossberg 500 persuader) when you run out of bullets, you can swing that batch like a baseball bat and beat the shitout of someone.
The permit thing depends on the county you live in. Some counties you can get the permit the same day you go in and apply for it. They do a background check on you, must be at the sherriffs office. As long as you have not felonies or warrants you will be good to go. Some counties you can wait anywhere from 3 -15 days, depends on their rules.
The only other permit you can get as a civillian is your concealed weapons permit, which means you can carry that beast with you wherever you go, except for airports, school zones and government buildings (libraries, courthouses, etc)
Get one of these for home protection and people will run out of the house when you pump it once.

well, any other specific opinions on the sw sigma 9? it's on sale right now for $299, but other than the looks (looks a lot like a glock for about half the price), i don't know much about it. i'd assume smith and wesson is a good company... but yeh, any more opinions on this particular gun? good starter gun?

I have an S&W 5906 as my service weapon....I don't really like it, but its what we're forced to carry, and it was free. If it was up to me, I'd take the glock in a second...or even better, a Heckler and Koch :naughty:
